Turnaround time is often presented as a measure of radiologist speed. In reality it is produced by the entire system: order quality, image availability, routing, staffing, comparison access, reporting and communication.

Measure the intervals that teams can act on

A single end-to-end number can hide the cause of delay. Separate acquisition-to-availability, availability-to-assignment, assignment-to-open, open-to-sign and sign-to-distribution intervals.

Make risk visible before breach

A service target should create proactive signals as a case approaches risk. Teams need enough time to reassign, add coverage, resolve missing information or communicate an exception.

  • Track targets by facility, priority and task type
  • Distinguish waiting on clinical input from unowned delay
  • Connect escalation to a named role or team
  • Review patterns rather than isolated breaches

Improve the system, not the scoreboard

Performance management works best when data leads to workflow improvement. If the metric only creates pressure at the final reporting step, upstream causes remain untouched.
